| Manchester United forward told to leave Old Trafford
| sbothai Former Premier League star and France legend David Ginola believes Anthony Martial may need to leave Old Trafford, if he is to force his way back into the international squad. The Manchester United forward was a surprise exclusion from the 23 man party named by Didier Deschamps for the upcoming World Cup in Russia, and the fallout from that has begun. Former Tottenham and Newcastle winger Ginola believes that the reason Martial did not make the final cut for the tournament next month is because he is not a regular for Manchester United.
The 22-year-old had featured 45 times this season for the Red Devils, prior to the FA Cup final on Saturday, where he began the match on the substitutes’ bench, but since the arrival of Alexis Sanchez in January he has found opportunities much more limited. Ginola believes if that situation does not change then if the Frenchman has aspirations of being a regular for his country he needs to move on. “The main reason Anthony Martial is not in the squad is that you need to be a regular in your club before becoming a regular in your national team,” Sky Sports quote him as saying.
“Deschamps has so many options and choices – strikers like Kylian Mbappe and Antoine Griezemann who have been consistently good for France – that it’s not as if he has to be in there if he’s not playing. “Players like Martial need to play and score goals for the confidence, they need to be a regular. If he is not a regular at Manchester United he will probably search for another club and find one if he wants to. “But I think Manchester United is a great club for him and it’s up to him to give more in training and in games. If Jose Mourinho doesn’t play him more regularly he probably thinks it’s because he doesn’t give his best all the time. sbothai
“I don’t see a manager like Mourinho not playing a player who can make him win games. It doesn’t work like that.” Martial has 18 caps for his country, but having slid down the pecking order at Old Trafford others have overtaken him in his position when it comes to national selection, and if the attacker has ambitions of playing on the world stage with France something will have to come to a head soon. With another summer of spending likely to take place in the red half of Manchester, the former Monaco star could see himself slipping further away from first-team football, which may well see him take the advice of Ginola and seek better opportunities elsewhere. sbothai
